Anna Maria Island travel
Tampa Airport to Anna Maria Island: Drive Time, Bridges and How to Plan Your Ride
The trip from Tampa Airport to Anna Maria Island is roughly 50 miles and typically takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and forty minutes by car. It is a straightforward drive, but the island has only a few ways on and off, vacation rentals have fixed check-in times, and most visitors arrive with a week of luggage. A little planning before you land makes the first afternoon of the trip much easier.

How far is Anna Maria Island from Tampa Airport?
Anna Maria Island sits on the Gulf of Mexico west of Bradenton, south of Tampa Bay. From Tampa International Airport (TPA), plan on these typical ranges in normal traffic:
- TPA to Holmes Beach or the City of Anna Maria: about 52 miles, usually 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.
- TPA to Bradenton Beach: about 50 miles, usually 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes.
Those are typical ranges, not promises. Weekday rush hours, weekend beach traffic, weather and the busy winter and spring season can all add time, especially on the last few miles onto the island.
The route: the Sunshine Skyway and two island bridges
From TPA the usual route runs south on I-275 through St. Petersburg and over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, then west through Bradenton toward the coast. From the mainland, two drawbridges cross to the island:
- Manatee Avenue, which arrives in Holmes Beach and is usually the natural choice for Holmes Beach and the City of Anna Maria at the north end.
- Cortez Road, which arrives in Bradenton Beach near Bridge Street at the south end.
Because both are drawbridges, they open for boat traffic, and the roads leading to them can back up on busy beach days. That last stretch is where most of the variation in drive time comes from. Your driver chooses the bridge closest to your address and adjusts for conditions on the day.
The island itself is narrow, with low speed limits and three small cities: Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach. Expect the final few miles to be slow and scenic rather than fast.
Tampa Airport to Anna Maria Island, or fly into Sarasota?
Visitors usually choose between two airports:
- Tampa International (TPA) is the larger airport, with more airlines and nonstop routes. The ride to the island is longer.
- Sarasota Bradenton International (SRQ) is much closer, about 16 miles and typically 30 to 45 minutes from the island, but has a smaller choice of flights.
There is no single right answer. Compare flight times and connections first, then weigh the ground trip. A nonstop into TPA with a longer private ride is often easier than a connection into a closer airport, particularly with children. We serve both: see our Tampa Airport to Anna Maria Island page and our Sarasota (SRQ) airport transportation page for route details.
Time your arrival around rental check-in
Anna Maria Island is mostly vacation rentals, cottages and small inns, and many have a set afternoon check-in time. A morning flight can put you on the island hours before the keys are ready. Before you book the ride:
- Confirm the check-in time and any early-arrival policy with your rental company or host.
- Work forward from your landing time. Allow time to deplane and collect bags, then add the drive.
- Plan the gap. If you will arrive early, a grocery stop or lunch on the way can fill the time better than waiting in a driveway with luggage.
- Have the entry details ready. Door codes, gate codes and the exact unit number save a lot of time at drop-off.
Airport pickups include flight monitoring, so the ride follows your actual arrival time if the flight runs early or late. Our Tampa Airport transportation page explains how arrivals work.
Luggage, beach gear and choosing a vehicle
A week at the beach rarely travels light. Suitcases, carry-ons, strollers, coolers and beach equipment often decide the vehicle more than the number of passengers does.
- Sedan: one or two travelers with standard luggage.
- Executive SUV: a family or small group with a week of bags.
- Sprinter van: larger families, or several households sharing a rental house.
List every bag and bulky item when you request a quote so the right vehicle is assigned. Rear-facing, forward-facing and booster car seats are available at no extra charge by advance request, subject to availability; our airport transportation with car seats page has the details. If you are unsure about size, the sedan, SUV or Sprinter guide walks through the choice.
Grocery stops and getting around the island
Many families ask for a grocery stop on the way to the rental so the kitchen is stocked before anyone unpacks. A stop can be added by advance request; mention it when you book so the time is built into the trip.
Once you are settled, you may not need a car every day. Manatee County operates a free trolley along the length of the island, and plenty of visitors walk or bike between the beach, shops and restaurants. Schedules and stops can change, so check the county transit website for current trolley information.
For dinners off the island, a day in Sarasota or St. Armands Circle, or a trip to Longboat Key, a private ride can be arranged in advance. Our Sarasota and Bradenton transportation page covers the wider area.
Planning the ride back to TPA
The return trip deserves as much thought as the arrival. Many rentals turn over on the same day of the week, so a lot of visitors head for the bridges within the same few hours on checkout morning.
- Start with your airline’s recommended arrival time at the airport.
- Add the drive, using the longer end of the typical range rather than the shorter one.
- Add a buffer for island traffic, a drawbridge opening and the Skyway.
- Book the return when you book the arrival, so both rides are confirmed before you travel.
